Biopharmaceutics Classification System
Definition:
A scientific framework which divides APIs into four groups, according to their solubility and permeability properties.
Highly soluble:
The highest dose strength is soluble in 250 ml or less of aqueous media over the pH range of 1-7.5 at 37°C
Highly permeable:
More than 90% of the orally administered dose is absorbed in the small intestine
| BCS Class I High Solubility/high permeability Ex: amlodipine, amiloride, propranolol, metoprolol, verapamil |
BCS Class II Low Solubility/high permeability Ex: carbamazepine, ketoprofen, naproxen, nevirapine, nifedipine |
| BCS Class III High Solubility/low permeability Ex: ranitidine, cimetidine, atenolol, enalapril, ethambutol |
BCS Class IV Low Solubility/low permeability Ex: acetazolamide, azithromycin, efavirenz, forosemide, glibenclamide |
